Despite tension and sanctions by India activities at Karachi Port grows
Karachi Port Trust closes fiscal year 2024-25 with flying colours to record a cargo handling of 54 million tonnes with an increase of 4.45 percent over the preceding financial year 2023-24.
The KPT also broke its all time container handling record to register a massive handling of 2.65 million TEUs.
The vessel movement and handling at Karachi Port has also registered a growth of 11pc during the fiscal year 2014-25.
Out of total handling of 1,943 vessels/ships, the port handled 1,093 container ships, 218 bulk carriers, 180 general cargo ships and 452 liquid bulk ship tankers.
The KPT is the main port of Pakistan was established in 1887, by the British colonial rulers as one of the key ports of the region.
The last quarter of the previous fiscal witnessed stress for the Karachi port like other ports of the Country due to Indian aggression.India imposed sanctions on shipping lines restricting them of not calling at Pakistani ports if they visit Indian ports.
Despite such conditions the analysis highlights outstanding performance of Karachi Port in handling export and import cargoes during the previous fiscal year.

Breakup shows that the port handled 41.68 million tonnes of dry cargo with a growth 3.57 pc and 12.28 million tonnes of liquid bulk cargo with a growth of 7.56 pc during the ending year 2024-25 comparatively from previous financial year 2023-24.
Export Cargo with growth of 6.49 pc was 20.02 million tonnes including 18.91 million tonnes of dry cargo, due to improvement in handling of clinker, rice, etc.
Import cargoes also witnessed a growth of 3.28 pc against preceding year to close at 33.93 million tonne.
The dry cargo imports closed at 22.77 million tonnes, mainly due to higher imports of Soyabean and Yellow Peas.
The liquid bulk imports handling was 11.16 million tonnes in 2024-25 showing an increase of 8.66pc mostly from the handling of Crude Oil, Palm Oil, Base Oil, Chemicals, Soyabean Oil, Canola Oil, etc.Karachi Port Trust ensures full compliance with the directives of Maritime Affairs Ministry and is well positioned to facilitate well in the speedy recovery of national economy.
