High-Level Talks on National Tractor Policy to Strengthen Agriculture and Industry

A high-level meeting with tractor manufacturers was held today under the chairmanship of the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production, Mr. Haroon Akhtar Khan, to discuss the formulation of the National Tractor Policy.

During the meeting, tractor manufacturers raised concerns about high GST, excessive regulatory duties, high markup rates, and the lack of a consistent policy framework.

Currently, tractors are priced between Rs2 and 5 million. While the most common imported tractors are from Belarus.

During the meeting, a detailed exchange of views took place on the proposed policy. Mr. Khan described the National Tractor Policy as a landmark initiative aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of promoting and protecting local industry.

He highlighted the significant role of tractor manufacturers in the domestic production process and emphasized that affordable tractors would prove highly beneficial for farmers across the country. 

He directed manufacturers to propose solutions to reduce tractor prices to make them more accessible.

“Local industry protection is central to the Prime Minister’s vision,” said Mr. Khan. “The sectors of agriculture, exports, and manufacturing are closely linked and must be developed in tandem to drive economic growth.”

He also stated that increasing exports and improving the national economy remain key priorities of the government. The suggestions put forward by the tractor manufacturers during the meeting will be thoroughly reviewed.

It was decided that a follow-up meeting on the same agenda will be convened next week.

Mr. Khan further remarked that tractor loan schemes could be highly beneficial for unemployed youth by creating job opportunities in the agricultural sector.

The manufacturers appreciated Mr. Haroon Akhtar Khan’s proactive efforts and commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the industry.
